Sylhet-Chhatak train service suspended for 3 months,

6The passenger train service between Sylhet city and Chhatak has remained suspended for more than three months, causing immense suffering to the local commuters.
Kazi Shahidur Rahman, station master at Sylhet railway station said. The train service was put on hold for security reason on January 5, when the BNP-led 20-party alliance enforced an indefinite transport blockade around the countryThe railway authorities also appointed Bangladesh Ansar members at vulnerable points along the route to avoid untoward incidents,
This interruption in service is causing quite an inconvenience to the regular commuters on this route.
Shamim Ahmed, resident of Mansinagar village in Chhatak said.“Most of us prefer the train service because it is cost effective. The fare is Tk12 – Tk8 for students. But without the train service, we have to commute on the road, in which case we have to pay around Tk45 for bus fare, or at least Tk80 for CNG-run autorickshaw fare,” “We demand immediate resumption of the train service.”
“The train used in this service is currently in the yard. The station master’s post at Chhatak railway station is also vacant. So immediate resumption of the service is uncertain,” he told.
The 35km train route was built in 1956 to carry stones from Chhatak to Sylhet, according to railway sources. There are two stoppages between Chhatak and Sylhet: Afjalabad and Khajanchi. When the service was active, the train left Chhatak at 8:30am and left Sylhet at 4:30 pm.
