Surge in criminal activities causes panic in Sylhet

38Criminal offences like killing, women and child repression, abduction, burglary, riot, mugging and drug peddling have risen alarmingly in the Sylhet district, signalling deterioration of law and order and causing concern among the people.

According to sources, a total of 145 crimes occurred during the last Four months whereas 200 criminal offences took place during the time last year.

As per the information placed before the district law and order committee meeting held recently, the number murders was 12 in the first four months in 2015, but 15 killing incidents have happened so far during the same time this year.

When contacted Superintendent of Police, Sylhet Nura alom mina told this correspondent that police always tries their best to ward off criminal activities. But crimes like killing and suicide are increasing due to personal and family related disputes coupled with extramarital love affairs.

Senior Lawyer of Sylhet Numan Mahmud said as criminals are not being taken under proper punishment, they are encouraged to commit more criminal offences without any fear.

People of the city blamed police for crime galore in different parts of the city. They alleged police are not willing to bring the culprits under law; rather they are busy to satisfy the ruling party cadres those who are responsible for the rise of crimes.
