Tower Hamlets Council is the highest new local government entry on the UK’s Stonewell Index.
The council has been named as one of the best employers for lesbian, gay and bi-sexual staff.
The organisation was praised for recognising LGBT heroes across different strands of diversity and using creative mechanisms to work with the community and celebrate diversity.
The council entered the Stonewell Index at number 30, the definitive list showcasing the best employers for lesbian, gay and bi staff. It is compiled from submissions to the Workplace Equality Index, a powerful benchmarking tool used by employers to create inclusive workplaces.
Mayor of Tower Hamlets, John Biggs said: “I am proud that Stonewall have recognised the work that we are doing to support cohesion in our workplace and across our communities. Promoting a positive approach to equalities, stamping out discrimination and empowering our residents are responsibilities that we take very seriously.
“We will continue to celebrate our LGBT staff and community’s contribution to making Tower Hamlets a great place to live.”
Tower Hamlets Homes also shone again, taking a spot in the top five of the Index for the second consecutive year.
Megan Perryman, Head of Public Sector Programmes, Stonewall said: ‘Tower Hamlets should be very proud of itself after such a strong performance from the borough in this year’s Index, with Tower Hamlets Homes holding firmly onto its place in our Top 5, the council climbing the Index after a year of successes amidst often difficult times.
“We continue to be inspired by local government, and other public sector organisations like Tower Hamlets Homes, that embrace their diverse colleagues and customers and stand proudly together and continue to work towards equality with one another.’
