Man injured in Sunamganj clash dies, one held

An elderly man succumbed to his injuries at a hospital in Dhaka following a clash between two groups over a minor incident at Dharampasha upazila in Sunamganj district.

The victim, Mohammad Ali, 65, from Shorishyam village in the upazila, passed away on Monday night at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

According to police and local sources, around noon of October 28, Mohammad Ali’s great-granddaughter, Sita Begum, 6, was playing by the roadside when Maruf Mia, 10, son of Sabuj Mia, 45, from the same village, accidentally struck her with his bicycle. Upon hearing of the incident, Mohammad Ali scolded Maruf. Maruf later reported this to his father.

At around 4:30 PM, a heated argument erupted between Mohammad Ali and Sabuj Mia, which quickly escalated into a violent clash involving members of both families. The fight saw the use of sticks, machetes, and sharp weapons, injuring at least 10 people, both men and women.

Mohammad Ali, who was critically injured, was initially taken to Mohanganj Upazila Health Complex and later transferred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. As his condition worsened, he was moved to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he died at 12:10 AM on Monday.

Following the incident, Mohammad Ali’s younger brother, Abdul Majid, filed a case with Dharampasha Police Station, naming Sabuj Mia and eight others, along with 8-9 unidentified individuals.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Enamul Haque of Dharampasha Police Station confirmed that one of the accused has already been arrested. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects, with police conducting continuous operations to make further arrests.
