Police have arrested a local Awami league leader at Kulaura upazila in Moulvibazar district early Friday.
The arrested individual is ASM Kamrul Islam, General Secretary of Kulaura Upazila Awami League unit. Kamrul is also a former chairman of the upazila parishad.
He was detained from his home at Alalpur in the municipality area.
According to police sources, Kamrul was named in a case filed over an attack on students involved in the anti-discrimination student movement. Acting on a tip-off, a special team from district Detective Branch (DB) and local police conducted a raid at Kamrul’s home at Alalpur and arrested him.
Kulaura Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Md. Golam Apsar and DB OC Abu Zafar Mohammad Kabir were present during the operation.
OC Md. Golam Apser said that the arrest was part of “Operation Devil Hunt”, a nationwide law enforcement initiative aimed at maintaining stability across the country.
He was sent to jail on Friday morning following a court appearance, added the OC.
