Macmillan Coffee Morning: Fundraising in Tower Hamlets

London, 28 September — A special Coffee Morning was held by the Tower Hamlets Council’s Transport Department to raise funds for cancer support. The event took place on Friday (26 September) at the Toby Lane Depot in East London and was led by senior staff member Christine Long.

The initiative was supported by Route Manager Siba Khanom, Rizwana Bakt, and other staff from the department. Employees at the depot contributed by bringing homemade food, while attendees enjoyed coffee, snacks, and a special raffle draw, which raised a significant amount of money.

The fundraiser was part of Macmillan Cancer Support’s “World’s Biggest Coffee Morning”, a nationwide initiative that has been running since 1990. Over the years, it has raised nearly £290 million, with last year alone generating more than £10 million across the UK.

Event organiser Christine Long thanked all participants, saying: “The main aim of this event is to raise awareness about cancer. At the same time, it is important to inform the community about the vital services provided by Macmillan.”

She added that while cancer risks are increasing, there is still a lack of awareness, especially within minority communities. Yet, Macmillan Cancer Support continues to provide a wide range of free services that need to be made more accessible to people.

The Coffee Morning in Tower Hamlets not only helped raise funds but also played an important role in promoting cancer awareness.
