Ex-speaker Shirin Sharmin granted bail in attempted murder case

A Dhaka court on Sunday granted bail to former Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in a case filed over an attempted murder linked to the anti-discrimination movement.

The court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain granted her bail upon a petition, setting a bond of Tk50,000.

Earlier, on 7 April, Dr Chaudhury was arrested from a relative’s residence on Road 8/A at Dhanmondi in the capital and was subsequently sent to jail in connection with the case.

According to the case statement, the incident dates back to 18 July last year, during the anti-discrimination movement, when the victim, Md Ashraful, also known as Fahim, was participating in a procession inside the Azimpur Government Colony area under Lalbagh Police Station. He allegedly lost sight in his left eye after being struck by gunfire during the incident.

The victim filed an attempted murder case with Lalbagh Police Station on 17 July.
