He is a native of Jagannathpur Upazila of Sunamganj District, Sylhet Division.
Councillor Mohammed Islam officially took office as the Civic Mayor of the London Borough of Croydon Council, one of the most traditional of London’s 32 boroughs, on Wednesday evening (27 May 2026).
He will serve as mayor for the next one year.
Outgoing Civic Mayor, Councillor Richard Chatterjee handed over the responsibility to Mr Mohammed Islam on Wednesday.
At this time, the new mayor was welcomed as the new mayor by placing a gold medal-chain around his neck as per tradition.
The newly elected mayor’s wife, other family members, relatives, and friends were present at the time.
A live event was held at Croydon Town Hall on Wednesday evening to welcome Cllr Mohammed Islam, the Civic Mayor of the City of Croydon, London, on the occasion of Eid for Muslims in the United Kingdom.

Councillor Mohammed Islam is the current Civic Mayor of the London Borough of Croydon.
He is a prominent politician in the British-Bangladeshi community and an elected councillor for the Labour Party (Labour & Co-operative).
He is originally from Ipswich, but has made Croydon his home since 1980.
He has lived in the Selhurst area of Croydon for 22 years.
He lives with his wife, Farhana Islam and their four children.
Before entering politics, he was a licensed driving instructor by profession.
He has been serving in political and social roles in Croydon for a long time.
He represents the Selhurst ward on Croydon Council.
He was appointed Civic Mayor of Croydon at a formal mayoral inauguration ceremony at the annual council meeting on 27 May 2026.
He previously served as Deputy Civic Mayor on the same council (2025–26).
He is a founding member of the British Bangladeshi Society of Croydon (BBSC), an organisation that has long supported local education, culture and welfare.
