Aakash Odedra’s Songs of the Bulbul-  – a breathtaking journey from freedom to captivity

Aakash Odedra’s Songs of the Bulbul is a mesmerising, deeply moving work that takes audiences on an emotional journey from happiness, hope and freedom into entrapment and the devastating reality of the caged bird.

From the opening moments, Odedra’s virtuoso performance radiates joy and possibility. His extraordinary physicality, delicate gestures and breathtaking control create a sense of a bird in flight – free, curious and full of life. But gradually, that freedom begins to disappear. The stage becomes a place of confinement, and the beautiful bulbul becomes a symbol of all those who have been trapped, silenced or stripped of their ability to soar.

The moment when the bulbul’s eyes are taken out is hauntingly painful – a piercing, almost unbearable image accompanied by a shrieking cry of anguish. It is one of the most powerful moments of theatre, leaving the audience in stunned silence.

The beautiful sculptural set, atmospheric lighting and Rushil Ranjan’s evocative score combine with Rani Khanam’s exquisite choreography to create a world that feels both spiritual and deeply human.

A voiceover reflects on how an artist leaves a piece of themselves on stage – and eventually dies. That sentiment is profoundly felt in the final moments. As the last breath of air emerges, it feels as though we are witnessing not just the end of the bulbul, but a fragment of the artist himself being left behind.

Odedra is a joy to watch: graceful, vulnerable and utterly captivating. Songs of the Bulbul is a beautiful, poignant and unforgettable meditation on love, loss, freedom and the fragile beauty of life.
