Labour candidate John Biggs announced his selection of three deputy mayors – Cllr Sirajul Islam, Cllr Shiria Khatun, and Cllr Rachel Saunders – all experienced community leaders in Tower Hamlets.
He announced this in advance while launching his campaign officially in front of senior Labour Leaders. His official launching kick started in Scarlet Dot restaurant at Spitalfields on 9th of May which was conducted by newly re-elected Labour MP for Bethanl Greel and Bow Rushanara Ali.
Labour senior leaders who were present at the launching included former minister Tessa Jowell, former minister Sadiq Khan MP, former minister Steffen Teams, former MP Diane Abbott and leaders of boroughs around East London.
These leading Labour Party politicians gave their backing to John Biggs to be the next Mayor of Tower Hamlets at the packed event.
Before the event, Yvette Cooper, Labour’s shadow Home Secretary also joined John Biggs for a campaign session.
At the launching John Biggs said ‘It was an honour to have the support and backing of senior leaders from across the Labour Party. Having so many people at our launch event showed the real energy and determination there is locally to get a Labour Mayor elected back in Tower Hamlets.
‘We’ll be speaking with hundreds of local families up until polling day, outlining our plans to improve the borough – whether on housing, protecting our NHS or providing jobs and opportunities for young people in the borough.’
Rushanara Ali MP said, ‘this upcoming election is not against any person, but against a policy of a person. If anyone talks against my community, it hurts me, it irritates me. The mistrust created surrounding the community needs to be eliminated. One should not lose trust on law and order. None of us is above the law. It is dangerous to think oneself above the law.’
Sadiq Khan MP said, ‘People of Tower Hamlets deserve a better leadership. John Biggs is ready to lead the people of Tower Hamlets and the whole Labour Party is behind him.’
Cllr Sirajul Islam, Cllr Shiria Khatun, Cllr Rachel Saunders also addressed the audience at the meeting.
