S Alam Sugar Mills still burning after 41 hours

Though 41 hours have passed, Chattogram’s S Alam Refined Sugar Mills’ fire is still burning.

Fire Service members are trying to douse the blaze completely, but it was not possible till 9am on Wednesday.

Total 10 fire-fighting units are working there. The officials of the Fire Service said it would take time to extinguish the fire fully.

MD Abdul Khaleq, assistant director of Chattogram Fire Service, said, “The fire in the warehouse of the sugar factory is still burning. The warehouse is about 25,000 square feet. The height is equivalent to a 5-6 storey building. There were huge reserves of raw sugar. These sugars are burning. This is why, it takes time to put out the fire. But the fire is under our control. There is no chance to spread. We are trying to put out the fire completely.”

Dhaka Fire Service’s deputy assistant director Jashim Uddin said that there were huge reserve of raw sugar inside the warehouse. It’s a kind of combustible materials. For this, it is difficult to douse the fire through water.”

Md Hossain, human resource officer of S Alam Group, said, “There are total six warehouse inside the mills. The fire broke out at number-1 warehouse on Monday where there were 1,00,000 metric tonnes of sugar, worth about over crores of money. All the sugar were burnt down.”
