Strike at Osmani Medical over attack on female intern

Sylhet Osmani Medical College and Hospital’s interns went on work abstention protesting the attack on a female intern allegedly by the relatives of a patient.

According to hospital sources, an altercation ensued between some interns and relatives of a patient over treatment at No 6 ward of the hospital around 1AM on Saturday. At one stage, a relative of a patient assaulted a female intern.

Meanwhile, the hospital authorities handed three people including a woman to police over the attack.

Additional police have been deployed on the hospital premises to avert further trouble.

Medical services have been hampered, forcing the relatives of some patients to go to another hospital for treatment.

In a statement released Friday night, the intern doctors described the assault as ‘shocking and deeply concerning’ and demanded the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those responsible.
