Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Friday condemned what it described as a series of attacks on Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) leaders at Shahbagh Police Station, as well as assaults on activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir in Pabna and Cumilla.
In a statement, Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar criticised the incidents, calling them “barbaric and cowardly” and accused members of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal of carrying out the attacks.
He described the alleged assault on DUCSU leaders; including Literature and Cultural Affairs Secretary Musaddiq Ali Ibne Mohammad, Social Welfare Secretary AB Zubair and women leader Fatima Tasnim Zuma, inside Shahbagh Police Station as “deeply unfortunate and unacceptable.”
“This kind of attack on elected student representatives has no place in a democratic and civilised society,” Porwar said.
He further alleged that a fake social media post was circulated in the name of a Dhaka University student, Abdullah Al Mahmud.
Despite his denial, the student was reportedly threatened. When he went to file a general diary at the police station, Porwar claimed, it was not immediately accepted.
According to the statement, when DUCSU leaders later visited the police station to address the issue, they were attacked and seriously injured in the presence of law enforcement personnel.
Porwar criticised the role of the police, alleging inaction during the incident.
The Jamaat leader also reported separate attacks on Islami Chhatra Shibir activists.
He said several members were injured during a procession at Ishwardi Government College in Pabna on Thursday afternoon. Later that night, another incident at Cumilla Polytechnic Institute reportedly left at least 20 activists injured.
Porwar described the incidents as part of a “planned attempt” to destabilise educational institutions and called for ensuring peaceful coexistence among student organisations.
He urged authorities to identify those responsible for the alleged attack at Shahbagh Police Station and bring them to justice, while also calling on all parties to exercise restraint and avoid further political violence.
Porwar concluded by wishing a swift recovery to those injured.
