Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) ad-hoc committee head Tamim Iqbal admitted that payment-related disputes in the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League (DPL) remain a concern and said the board is considering a more structured system to ensure accountability from clubs.
Payment delays and disagreements over player contracts have regularly overshadowed previous editions of the country’s premier List A competition, with several cricketers protesting over unpaid dues in recent years.
At the DPL launch ceremony on Saturday, Tamim acknowledged that the BCB traditionally does not take direct responsibility for player payments because contracts are signed between clubs and players.
“Normally, the cricket board does not take liability regarding payment issues in the Dhaka Premier League because it is a direct deal between the clubs and the players,” Tamim said.
“But from our side, we will request every club to honour the contracts they have signed with the players. The overall financial situation has already become difficult and players are earning much less than before,” he added.
Tamim, however, hinted that the board wants to introduce a more accountable framework in the future, especially because the BCB now provides financial assistance to participating clubs.
“I genuinely think this should happen. If we can bring this under a proper tripartite contract involving the BCB, since the board is also contributing financially to the clubs, then things can become much better,” he added.
“This system has been running in one way for 37 years. Suddenly changing everything is not possible, but this is something we are discussing seriously,” he explained.
