Bangladesh High Commission in London observes the National Mourning Day

The National Mourning Day and 40th Death Anniversary of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was observed on Saturday 15 August 2015 by Bangladesh High Commission in London in a befitting manner and with due solemnity. Members of expatriate Bangladesh community, officials and staff of the High Commission participated in a programme arranged at Baden-Powel Conference Centre. The programme included hoisting of national flag at half-mast and observance of one minute silence remembering the brutal killings of Father of the Nation and his family and praying for salvation and peace for their incorporeal souls.
High Commission officials placed floral wreath at the portrait of Bangabandhu led by High Commissioner M Abdul Hannan.  Leaders from other organisations who placed floral wreath included United Kingdom Awami League, All European Bangbandhu Parishad and leaders of Communist Party.
Messages of President, Prime Minister, Foreign Minister and State Minister for Foreign Affairs were read at the event.
Prominent journalist, writer and columnist Abdul Gaffar Chowdhury talked about the colourful life of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman where he mentioned him as a great leader and head of state.
In an open discussion meeting, High Commissioner M Abdul Hannan, in his speech, said that Bangabandhu worked tirelessly for improving the lives of Bangladeshis. What happened in 15th August was to terminate the achievement of our liberation.
The Embassy officials and expatriate Bangladeshis took part in the discussion on the life and philosophy of the Father of the Nation. The speakers highlighted the contribution of the great leader to Bangladesh’s independence. They condemned the barbaric act of assassination of the Father of the Nation along with his family members on 15 August 1975.  They prayed for salvation and eternal peace of the soul of Bangabandhu.
President of UK Awami League Sultan Sharif and Friends of Bangladesh former MP Michael Burns took part in the discussion. Press Minister Nadim Qadir read out from the life of the great leader.  Presenter Urmee Mazhar recited poetry on the colourful life of Banglabandhu.
Journalist from Bengali print and electronic media were also present at the mourning day event.
