In a move to support vulnerable citizens and combat black market activities, Mohammad Mohsin Mia Madhu, former mayor of Sreemangal and ex-president of the local BNP, has opened no-profit shop named ” Lemon Fresh Meat” in the New Market area, where chickens and eggs will be sold at original farm prices without profit.
The official launch of the no-profit shop took place at 11:30am on Sunday in Sreemangal, Moulvibazar.
Mohammad Shahin Sultan, executive director of the Lemon Group, said that this initiative was undertaken at the request of Mohsin Mia to stabilize market conditions and provide essential food items to consumers at affordable prices.
The initiative is being promoted through public announcements across various locations in the town.
“We will continue this program until the prices of chickens and eggs are within reach of the general public,” Shahin Sultan said.
Former BNP general secretary Mohammad Yakub Ali emphasized that the initiative would remain in place until the market for these products is brought under control.
During the inauguration, Mohsin Mia Madhu expressed his dismay at the excessive profits made by unscrupulous traders through market manipulation.
“My brother’s farm supplies over a hundred thousand chickens to the market each month, and it is concerning to see how some traders exploit the situation to inflate prices,” he said.
Mohsin Mia further announced plans to expand the initiative, saying that within a few days, essential items such as rice, lentils, oil, salt, onions, garlic, potatoes, and winter vegetables would also be sold at wholesale prices without profit.
He condemned the syndicates that have thrived under authoritarian rule, highlighting their role in creating artificial shortages and driving up prices.
“We must dismantle these syndicates and call upon honest businesses to refocus on the welfare of the people,” he said.
