A fire broke out at a plastic factory in Kamalbag area of Old Dhaka at approximately 3:20 PM. Initially, two units of the fire service were deployed to bring the blaze under control.
An eyewitness told The Observer, “Suddenly, I saw smoke curling into the sky, within moments, the fire began to spread rapidly.”
After nearly two hours of joint efforts by local residents and the fire service, the fire was brought under control.
Md. Anwarul Islam, an officer from the Fire Service Media Department, said, “After receiving the fire report, our two units reached the scene by 3:30 PM. As the fire intensified, five additional units were dispatched to the location.”
He added, “Since the plastic footwear factory is located in a densely populated residential area, it posed significant challenges for us.”
Assistant Director of Fire Service and Civil Defence, Kazi Nuruzzaman, was present at the site.
After inspecting the scene, he told reporters, “We faced a water supply issue here. Despite the nearby river, we couldn’t use the water due to heavy pollution and the presence of polythene, plastic and garbage, which could have jammed our pumps. Upon assessing the situation, we brought in our special water tankers, which played a crucial role in controlling the fire.”
The cause of the fire remains unknown. As of the latest reports, no casualties have been reported.
