
The police arrested Abul Kalam Chowdhury, former mayor of Chhatak municipality in Sunamganj and vice-president of the district Awami League, activities of which are now banned, in Sylhet on Thursday.
Mohammad Akhter, inspector, investigation, of Jalalabad police station under Sylhet Metropolitan Police said that the police arrested him at Tarapur Tea Garden area in the city.
Mohammad Akhter said that the arrested was produced before a magistrate court after showing him arrested in a case filed for attacking on a rally during the July-August uprising in 2024.
‘The court ordered to send him to jail in the case,’ he said.
After the formation of the Chhatak municipality in 1997, municipal elections were held five times and Abul Kalam Chowdhury became winner for four times in the elections.
