Strait of Hormuz ‘completely open’ during Lebanon ceasefire: Iran FM

Iran’s Foreign Minister Araghchi says passage for all commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz is “completely open” for the 10-day period of the ceasefire in Lebanon.

Foreign Minister Araghchi said in a post on X the Strait was open for all commercial vessels for the remainder of the US-brokered 10-day truce between Israeli forces and Iran-backed Hezbollah agreed between Israel and Lebanon.

He said the passage of ships would need to be along the route that Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organisation had announced.

Since the start of the war that the US-Israeli coalition launched on February 28 and was temporarily halted by a ceasefire on April 8, Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz to ships linked to the US, Israel and their allies.

Although Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, who brokered the ceasefire agreement between Iran and the US on April 8, stated that the ceasefire also included Lebanon, the US administration later argued that Israeli attacks on Lebanon were not part of the temporary ceasefire with Iran.

Iranian officials have also stated that the ceasefire includes halting all conflicts and wars in the region, including in Lebanon, and that talks with the US are contingent upon the declaration of a ceasefire in Lebanon.

US President Donald Trump announced yesterday that the parties had agreed on a 10-day ceasefire.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, however, stated that they accepted the ceasefire but announced that they would remain in the areas they occupied in southern Lebanon.
