Discussion on dengue prevention held at primary school in Sunamganj

As dengue cases continue to rise across the country, Bashundhara Shuvosangho hosted an awareness-raising discussion at Chinakandi Government Primary School in Bishwambharpur of Sunamganj on Monday.

The event was chaired by Jahangir Alam Bhuiyan, president of the Bishwambharpur upazila branch of Bashundhara Shuvosangho. Other speakers included the upazila branch’s General Secretary Shah Alam, Chinakandi Government Primary School Headmaster ABM Shahidul Islam Akik, Chinakandi Bazar Committee General Secretary Abdul Khalek Bacchu, Mufti Abul Hasan and a student’s guardian named Farid Mia.

Speakers at the discussion said that besides treatment, awareness and cleanliness are the most important measures to prevent dengue. Standing water around homes and schools must be removed regularly to prevent Aedes mosquitoes from breeding. Flower pots, discarded containers, tires, coconut shells and any other place where water accumulates can become breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes. Therefore, such places need to be cleaned regularly.

The speakers said that if students become aware, they can educate not only themselves but also their families and neighbors. As a result, the message of dengue prevention can quickly reach a larger section of the population. For this reason, they emphasized the importance of holding regular dengue prevention awareness meetings and cleanliness drives at educational institutions and increasing student participation in such activities.

Jahangir Alam Bhuiyan said everyone must play a responsible role in preventing dengue from their respective positions. Instead of relying solely on the administration or health authorities, families, educational institutions and local communities must work together. He said students could play an important role in dengue prevention if they were properly made aware of the disease.

Headmaster ABM Shahidul Islam Akik said it is extremely important to raise awareness among students about health and cleanliness. Alongside keeping the school environment clean, students should be regularly encouraged to ensure that water does not accumulate around their homes.
