Jamaat announces 2-day programmes over Sayedee’s death

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has announced a two-day programme over the death of the party’s late leader and convicted war criminal Delwar Hossain Sayedee.

Acting Ameer of the party Prof Mujibur Rahman made the announcement at a press conference on Wednesday.
He said the party will stage demonstrations and protest marches across the country on August 18 and 23.

Earlier on Tuesday, a clash took place at the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in the capital after followers of Sayedee attempted to hold ‘gayebana janaza’ (funeral-in-absentia prayers) after the Zohr prayers amid National Mourning Day prayers there.

Clashes also took place between his followers and law enforcement on Tuesday during a ‘gayebana janaza’ for the late Jamaat leader in Chittagong.

Sayedee, 83, who had been sentenced to life imprisonment for crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War, passed away on Monday night while undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) after several cardiac arrests.

Delwar Hossain Sayedee was buried in Pirojpur after Zohr prayers on Tuesday afternoon.
