More than 150 underprivileged tea workers at Maizdihi Tea Estate of Sreemangal upazila in Moulvibazar district, received new sarees as festive gifts in a heart-warming initiative ahead of Sharadiya Durga Puja.
The sarees were distributed on Friday by Bismillah NM Zulfikar Foundation.
The event was held at Maizdihi Tea Garden premises, with the presence of Bismillah NM Zulfikar Foundation’s chairperson and apprentice lawyer Nadira Akhter Nira, vice-chairman Engineer Md. Moktar Hossain, Tourist Police officer-in-charge Md. Kamrul Hasan, local tea garden panchayat members, garden representatives and journalists Ahad Mia, Salahuddin Shuvo, among others.
Tea workers expressed their joy and gratitude upon receiving the new clothing, saying the sarees were a welcome surprise ahead of the festival.
Many returned home smiling, carrying their gifts with happiness and pride.
Chairperson Nadira Akhter Nira shared the story behind the initiative. She mentioned that during a recent trip from Sonargaon to visit tourist spots in Moulvibazar, she stopped by Maizdihi Tea Garden.
While there, she asked local tea workers for drinking water and engaged in heartfelt conversations about their lives and struggles. Some of the workers requested her help with new clothes for Puja; a promise she made and later fulfilled.
She said, “The marginalized communities in our society often remain deprived of basic joys. That’s why we came here, on behalf of Bismillah NM Zulfikar Foundation, with sarees for the low-income tea workers of the garden; just to bring a bit of happiness to their lives during Puja.”
Nira also urged other social organizations to step forward and support disadvantaged communities, emphasizing that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference.
