India, Bangladesh bound by shared sacrifices, heritage: Verma

Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Verma has said that the emotional bond between India and Bangladesh is deeply rooted in the shared sacrifices of 1971 Liberation War, forming the foundation of a “unique and special” bilateral relationship.

During a recent visit to Dhakeshwari Temple in Dhaka, accompanied by his wife, the envoy highlighted the historical and geographical ties between the two neighbouring countries, emphasizing that their connection extends beyond borders to a rich cultural and emotional heritage.

“India and Bangladesh are linked not just by history and geography, but also by a common heritage of language, literature, art, music and festivals,” Verma said.

He described Durga Puja as one such celebration that reflects the deep-rooted cultural bonds shared between the two nations.

“These festivities remind us that our cultural ties are older and deeper than national boundaries. They also highlight that the true strength of our relationship lies in our people; in their shared traditions, mutual respect and lived experiences,” he added.

Describing Durga Puja as a celebration of devotion, unity and compassion, the High Commissioner said the festival symbolizes the triumph of good over evil and hope over despair. It is also an occasion that brings families together, fosters community spirit and encourages the flourishing of art and music.

On the occasion of Maha Ashtami, he prayed to Durga to bless everyone with wisdom, compassion, peace and strength to continue nurturing the friendship between the peoples of India and Bangladesh.

“We hope this Durga Puja inspires new aspirations and helps us build an even brighter future for our relations,” Verma said.
