Tarique Rahman states principled stance on relations with India

BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman has emphasized that Bangladesh’s interests will always come first for him. He said that in dealings with any country—including neighboring India—he will prioritize the interests of the Bangladeshi people.

In an exclusive interview with BBC Bangla on Tuesday (October 7), during the second part of the programme, Tarique said, “It’s not about any particular country; the issue is Bangladesh. I will put the interests of my people and my country first. While protecting those interests, I will do whatever is possible.”

Responding to questions about relations with India, he made it clear that he will claim Bangladesh’s rightful rights. “Of course, I want my share of the water. Of course, I don’t want to see another Felani hanging on the border. If harm comes to my people, I will never accept it,” he said.

Addressing the current cool relations with India, Tarique added, “If India chooses to provide refuge to a dictator and, as a result, becomes unpopular among Bangladeshis, there is nothing we can do. The people of Bangladesh have decided to keep a distance from them. So, I have to stand with my people.”

The interview was conducted virtually from London by BBC Bangla editor Mir Sabbir and senior journalist Qadir Kallol. The second and final part of this two-part interview was published by BBC Bangla on Tuesday.
