The conflict in Syria has had a terrible human cost and is now considered the largest humanitarian crisis since the World War II. By January 2016, 13.5 million Syrians were in need of humanitarian assistance, according to the European Commission.
The European Union and the member states have allocated more than €5 billion in funding to help relieve the humanitarian crisis in Syria. By January 2016 6.5 million Syrians were internally displaced and more than 4.6 million refugees registered and waiting to be registered in neighbouring countries.
Hundreds of thousands of people have tried to cross the Mediterranean in search of safety and many have lost their lives trying to do so. European Parliament has repeatedly called for more efforts to prevent further loss of life at sea and for European countries to assume their fair share of responsibility and solidarity towards the member states that receive most of the refugees.
