The High Court on Wednesday dismissed three separate income tax reference cases filed by Nobel Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus challenging the notice of National Board of Revenue (NBR).
Now, Dr Yunus have to pay Tk 12 crore to NBR as tax.
Earlier, he has paid 3 crore as tax, out of 15 crore, while filing an appeal in the trial court against the verdict.
An HC bench of Justice Muhammad Khurshid Alam Sarkar and Justice Sardar Md Rashed Jahangir pronounced the verdict today dismissing the cases.
Attorney general A M Amin Uddin was at the court on behalf of the state, while lawyer Mostafizur Rahman Khan was present on behalf of the petitioner.
On May 23, the hearing on the three separate cases was ended.
Muhammad Yunus challenged the validity of NBR’s three notices that demanded a tax amount of Tk15 crore.
On June 20, 2014, the Taxes Appellate Tribunal dismissed Yunus’ appeal. Later in 2015, he filed three separate income tax reference cases with the HC.
NBR served three separate notices claiming Tk 12,28,74,000 as tax against Tk 61.57 crore as donation during 2011-2012 fiscal year, Tk 1.60 crore tax against Tk 8.15 crore as donation in 2012-2013 FY and Tk 1.50 crore as tax against Tk 7 crore as donation in 2013-2014 FY as per the Donation Tax-1990.
