Dr Yunus gets bail in labour law violation case

Nobel Laureate economist and Grameen Telecom Chairman Dr Muhammad Yunus and three other have secured bail in a case filed for violation of the labour law.

They will remain on bail till their appeal will be dismissed.

Labour Appellate Tribunal passed this order on Sunday following Dr Yunus’s bail appeal.

Besides, Yunus also filed another petition seeking acquittal establishing 25 logic against his six-month jail sentence.

Three other are Ashraful Hassan, Nurjahan Begum and Mohammad Shahjahan, top officials of the Grameen Telecom.

The Dhaka Third Labour Court on January 1 sentenced the four to six months’ of imprisonment, with a fine of Tk 25000 each, in the case.

The court also granted them conditional bail on the same day.

Rejecting the judgment, the Nobel laureate said, “I have been punished for a crime that I haven’t committed… If you want to call it justice, you can.”

On September 9, 2021, Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE) filed the case against Dr Yunus and three others alleging that they violated the labour law. The court on June 6, 2023, framed charges against Yunus and three others in the case.
