Obaidul Quader’s brother among 2 candidates boycott polls

Shahadat Hossain, younger brother of Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader, boycotted Companiganj upazila parishad polls in Noakhali bringing allegation of vote rigging.

Another chairman candidate upazila Awami League general secretary Mizanur Rahman also boycotted the election.

Bringing allegations of the fake vote, occupation of centres and vote rigging, both the chairman candidates announced the vote boycott at 12pm on Wednesday.

They allegaed that Companiganj upazila Awami League president and Bashurhat mayor Abdul Quader Mirza’s son and nephews occupied the polling centres.

Shahadat Hossain said, “Mirza’s supporters forced my agents out of the centres and sealed in pineapples. At least 20 of my followers were injured. I demand the cancellation of this election.”

Mentionable, the third phase of the sixth upazila parishad elections in 87 upazilas is underway on Wednesday (May 29).
