8 Rohingyas among 9 killed in Cox’s Bazar landslides

At least nine people were killed in separate landslides in Cox’s Bazar’s Ukhiya early Wednesday.

The incident happened at 8, 9 and 10 number camps at Ukhiya.

The deceased were Rohingyas Md Hares, 2, Futuni, 34, Md Kalam, Selina Khatun, Abu Meher, Jaynab Bibi, Md Hossain Ahmed, 30, and his wife Anwara Begum; and Abul Kalam, who was Bangladeshi national.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Tanvir Hossain said that big chunks of mud collapsed on a number of houses at 8, 9 and 10 Rohingya camps due to heavy rainfall, leaving nine dead on the spot.

Fire service personnel and police are conducting rescue operations with the help of locals.

8 Armed Police Battalion (APBN) Commander Additional DIG Md Amir Zafar said separate landslides occurred in Panbazar and Hakimpara areas in the early morning.

The bodies of nine people were recovered and the death toll may rise, he added.
