Judiciary staff to observe 2-day work stoppage

Bangladesh Judicial Service Association has announced a two-day, half-day work stoppage on June 22 and 23, protesting the government’s failure to meet their longstanding demands. These include implementing a separate pay scale aligned with Bangladesh Judicial Service and abolishing block position system in favour of a distinct recruitment policy.

The announcement was made on Friday at a press conference in Old Dhaka by association president Md. Rezoan Khandaker.

General Secretary Kazi Md. Salauddin and other leaders were also present in the conference.

Khandaker said the decision is part of a continued movement. On May 5, judiciary support staff across the country observed a similar two-hour work stoppage, but the government has yet to take any visible steps to address their concerns.

He emphasized that although the judiciary was separated from the executive branch in 2007, only judicial officers have received a separate pay scale and recruitment rules. Support staff continue to receive salaries under general civil administration structure, despite working in the same offices.

Khandaker further noted that judges receive various allowances, including judicial, court recess and duty allowances, that are not extended to support staff.

He warned that unless their demands are met, more stringent action will follow.
