Anisul, Amu among 8 arrested in new cases related to July movement

Dhaka courts have ordered the arrest of eight individuals, including former ministers Anisul Haque and Amir Hossain Amu, in connection with killings and attempted killings during the last year’s anti-discrimination student movement.

Metropolitan Magistrate Arifur Rahman granted the arrests following separate police applications.

The accused are Anisul Haque, Amir Hossain Amu, Md. Abdur Razzak, Rashed Khan Menon, Hasanul Haq Inu, former MP Sayedul Haq Sumon, Kazi Monirul Islam Monu, and NASA Group chairman Nazrul Islam Majumdar.

In the Riaz murder case under Jatrabari Police Station, Anisul, Amu, Razzak, Menon, Inu, Sumon, and Monu were arrested. Monu is also named in the Zubaid Islam murder case, while Nazrul Islam was arrested in the attempted murder case of Naeem Hasan Niloy under Vatara Police Station.

According to police, Riaz was shot on August 5 last year while participating in a protest at Shahid Faruk Road, Jatrabari. He was declared dead at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. His sister Farzana Begum filed the murder case on 22 July this year.

During the student movement, 19-year-old Nayeem Hasan Niloy was shot on July 19 in front of Farazi Hospital, Vatara, during a march. After long-term treatment, he filed a case on October 14 naming 76 individuals, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

In the Zubaid Islam case, the student was shot on July 20 at Shoni Akhra, Jatrabari and later died. The case was filed on February 23.
