ICT launches investigation into Awami League as political party

The Investigation Agency of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has formally launched the investigation in alleged crimes against humanity committed by Awami League as a political party.

The investigating officer has already been appointed to this end, said ICT Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam to media on Tuesday.

Action will be taken against other parties if they are found to be involved during the course of the investigation, he added, sating that, ”When the investigation will start in full swing, the team can inform the media how far it has progressed in holding Awami League accountable as a group.”

”An investigation officer has been appointed and they will complete their investigation work soon. They will give their utmost effort. Appropriate action will be taken against the Awami League as a party after the investigation submits its report.”

When asked what kind of punishment could be imposed if the party’s crimes were proved, the ICT chief prosecutor said the law clearly outlines the types of punishment that can be handed down to a political party.

“The law mentions options such as banning the party, imposing other forms of sanctions, seizing property, or issuing certain directives regarding its leaders and activists,” he said.
