Abandoned grenade recovered in Moulvibazar

Police recovered an abandoned grenade from beside a residential house in Kamalganj upazila of Moulvibazar district on Saturday morning.

The grenade was recovered beside the house of Sultan Mia, a CNG auto-rickshaw driver, at Shri Surya Noagaon village under Patanushar union in the upazila.

According to locals, a local farmer spotted the grenade while cutting grass and informed Patanushar union Ansar commander Nesar Ahmed Juned, who later informed police.

Being informed, police rushed to the spot, marked the area with red flags and secured the site.

Earlier, the grenade was first discovered a few days ago while fishing in a pond. Unaware of its danger, locals reportedly threw it into a ditch on nearby land.

Locals believe the grenade is very old and suspect it may date back to the 1971 Liberation War, as the nearby Shamshernagar Airport was used by Pakistani forces during that time. Residents also recalled that another live grenade was recovered from the same village in July last year.

Kamalganj Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Abdul Awwal said that they informed the army’s bomb disposal team, which will deactivate the grenade.
