Jamaat now a changed party, has come to respect Freedom Fighters: Parwar

The Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has changed a lot since the Liberation War of 1971 and can no longer be equated with the old Islamic party, said the party’s Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar on Friday.

Since the war, many debates have been raised over Jamaat’s position in the middle of the 1971 political storm, but the party leadership has revised the constitution many times over the course of time, putting an end to the debates.

Mia Golam Parwar made the remarks while speaking at a labour rally held at the Cumilla Town Hall field, Cumilla city. Jamaat-linked labour group, Bangladesh Sramik Kalyan Federation, arranged the rally on the occasion of the World Labour Day 2026.

The new Jamaat holds the “Valiant Freedom Fighters of the Great Liberation War” with dignity and also pays due respect, the Jamaat leader added.

In the introduction of the new party constitution it has been made clear that any new aspiring members must hold and respect these values to join the party.

None can join the party if he or she does not recognise the sacrifices made for preserving the nation’s independence and sovereignty, Mia Golam Parwar noted.

He also said the matching of tone by the Opposition Leader, Jamaat Ameer Shafiqur Rahman, and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in the closing session of the parliament “raised hopes of unity.”

“We want to move forward with this new sense of unity.”

He also said that the recently passed “Jatiya Muktijoddha Council (Amendment) Bill, 2026” includes “bad intent” and should be amended.

The controversial part is a result of malign efforts waged by a malign force, and is backed by a foreign conspiracy aimed at dividing the nation, Mia Golam Parwar alleged.

The force upholding the controversy is not demonstrating “a sense patriotism” it appears to claim since it seeks to preserve the divisive controversy over Jamaat’s historic war-time role, and ignore the numerous revisions of Jamaat’s constitution.
