M A Mannan, state minister of Bangladesh for Finance and Planning, said that the expatriates’ remittance played a significant role in the economy of Bangladesh during the recent global recession. He also reassured the expatriates about the safe and sound environment for investment in businesses. Mr M A Mannan made the above-mentioned comments during his visit to Weekly Bangla Mirror office on Saturday last.
Having been warmly received at the office by Bangla Mirror editor  Abdul Karim Goni, Mr Mannan was exchanging his views on various issues with expatriates. He said that Bangladeshi people consider expatriates as their assets. They are also the champions for Bangladesh outside the country, he added. He said that the ruling government is offering maximum co-operation and assistance to the expatriates who are interested in investing their money back home. Expatriates’ investment is tax-free and business profits can be brought back abroad, Mr Mannan added while exchanging his views with expatriates who come from different professions.
Mr Mannan informed the expatriates that the structural developments are progressing as planned to improve the transportation system of Sylhet and the rest of the country. He remembered that the introduction of ferry on the river Kushiara-near Raniganj of Jagannathpur upazila- has reduced 70 kilometre of distance between Sunamganj and Dhaka. A budget of 140 crore taka has already been approved to build a bridge to replace the ferry, added Mr Mannan saying that the bridge will be completed in next three years.
