Cumilla’s Brahmanpara upazila is now submerged by flood water.
At least 30 villages of the upazila have been flooded since Saturday evening to Sunday morning as the embankment of the Gumti River has broke down.
The water began to rise on Saturday afternoon and the houses in the upazila were completely submerged by evening.
According to the upazila administration, around 7,500 people have taken refuge in shelter centres. All schools and colleges there have been declared closed.
Local sources reported that on Thursday (August 22) night, the embankment of the Gumti River at Burichong upazila’s Burburia area broke, allowing water to enter the local areas. Burichong upazila was flooded by that night, leading to a flash flood across the upazila.
Some seven lakh are still stranded by the devastating flood in the whole district and suffering from the food crisis. Over 50,000 flood victims have taken refuge in 724 shelters in the district.
