Death threats to Jamaat candidate Amir Hamza; mahfils suspended

A general diary (GD) has been filed with the Kushtia Model Police Station following allegations of death threats against Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Amir Hamza in the Kushtia-3 (Sadar) constituency.

His brother-in-law Abu Bakkar lodged the GD on Monday night. Meanwhile, Amir Hamza announced the suspension of all his waz mahfils through a post on his Facebook account late Monday.

Confirming the matter, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kushtia Model Police Station Kabir Hossain Matubbar said on Tuesday that the GD includes several Facebook links allegedly containing death threats against Amir Hamza.

“The matter mentioned in the GD will be investigated today after obtaining court permission,” the OC said.

Earlier on Monday afternoon, Jamaat leaders and activists of Kushtia Sadar Upazila held a protest procession and rally in the city, condemning the alleged death threats.

During the rally, Kushtia district Jamaat Ameer Abul Hashem suffered a stroke while delivering a speech and later died.
