Bangladesh set to get male Prime Minister after 35 years

Bangladesh is set to have a male Prime Minister for the first time in about 35 years, following the unofficial results of the 13th National Parliamentary Election that show a landslide victory for the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its alliance.

According to the preliminary results, the BNP-led alliance has secured a majority of seats and is moving toward forming the next government.

Party sources said BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman is expected to become the country’s next Prime Minister.

If confirmed, his appointment would mark the first time since 1989 that Bangladesh has had a male Prime Minister. The last male Prime Minister was Kazi Zafar Ahmed. Since 1990, the country has been predominantly led by female Prime Ministers.

During this period, leadership alternated mainly between former BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and Bangladesh Awami League President Sheikh Hasina, both of whom served multiple terms as head of government.

However, the current outcome remains unofficial, and the final and formal results will be announced by the Election Commission before the new government is officially formed.
