Swedish ambassador meets opposition leader

Swedish Ambassador to Bangladesh Nicolas Weeks paid a courtesy call on the Leader of the Opposition and Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Dr Shafiqur Rahman at his office in the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Sunday.

The meeting, held at 11:30am, took place in what both sides described as a cordial and warm atmosphere.

The Swedish envoy was accompanied by First Secretary Matilda Svensson and Ole Lundin, Second Secretary and Head of Trade, Political and Communications.

The discussions focused on the post-election situation in Bangladesh, bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Sweden, investment prospects and issues of mutual interest concerning international affairs.

Both sides expressed optimism over expanding Swedish investment in Bangladesh and reaffirmed Sweden’s continued support for the country in the future.

The meeting also covered the July Charter, implementation of the referendum verdict and the possible implications of several widely discussed ordinances.

The two sides exchanged views on the proposed national budget, reforms to the tax structure, finding an effective solution to the Rohingya crisis and various development projects in Bangladesh financed by Sweden.

Barrister Mir Ahmad Bin Quasem Arman MP, Foreign Affairs Adviser to the Opposition Leader, and Ali Ahmed Mabrur, a member of the Foreign Affairs Advisory Committee, were also present at the meeting.
