Hasnat Abdullah faces police inquiry during UK visit

Hasnat Abdullah, MP for Cumilla-4, has reportedly become involved in a police inquiry during his visit to the United Kingdom following an alleged altercation in Cambridge.

According to sources, Hasnat visited Cambridge on Friday at the invitation of National Citizen Party (NCP) leaders. While he and his associates travelled by car, a Bangladeshi delivery driver allegedly took photographs of their vehicle. The incident reportedly led to a confrontation between Hasnat’s companions and the driver, which later turned violent.

Witnesses alleged that several members of Hasnat’s group assaulted the delivery driver before leaving the scene. Local residents later helped police rescue the injured driver and take him to hospital. Based on the driver’s complaint, police reportedly detained one suspect that night. During questioning, the suspect allegedly identified Hasnat Abdullah and several others in connection with the incident.

An NCP UK Alliance leader, speaking on condition of anonymity, said police had asked Hasnat to appear at Cambridge Parkside Police Station to provide a statement. The leader said Hasnat attended the station accompanied by a lawyer.

Meanwhile, the NCP UK Alliance rejected the allegations in a statement signed by its Member Secretary, MA Himel. The organisation claimed that supporters of the Awami League and the ousted government had launched a campaign of misinformation and harassment against Hasnat Abdullah and his associates during their UK visit.

The statement said complainants had accused Hasnat Abdullah, Ehtesham Haque, Zakir Chowdhury, Shaheen Alam and several others of assaulting Awami League supporters and had filed a police complaint. The alliance alleged that the complaint aimed to waste the valuable time and resources of the UK police.

The statement also claimed that a specialised UK agency had launched an investigation into alleged Awami League activities, potential threats to public safety and their possible impact on law and order in the United Kingdom. It added that Hasnat Abdullah thanked British law enforcement authorities for what he described as their professional and responsible conduct.
