SUST top Bangladeshi varsities in world ranking

The Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) has taken the top position among Bangladeshi universities in a ranking of world universities prepared by website www.webometrics.info. The SUST also ranks 2400 in the world, according to the latest ranking list.
SUST Vice-Chancellor Dr Aminul Haque Bhuyan on Wednesday informed this to university authorities over phone. Students and teachers brought out a colorful procession on the campus yesterday to celebrate the achievement.
According to sources, the ranking site webometrics is the largest site for academic ranking of Higher Education Institutions. The sources said, starting from 2004, in every six months, an independent, objective, free, open scientific exercise is performed by the Cybermetrics Lab (Spanish National Research Council, CSIC) for the providing reliable, multidimensional, updated and useful information about the performance of universities from all over the world based on their web presence and impact which are then listed on the site webometrics.
The SUST began its academic program with three departments: physics, chemistry and economics. SUST is the first university in Bangladesh providing free Wi-Fi access for students and staff across the campus. The university introduced the semester system (American credit system) for the first time in the 1996-97 session. According to the master plan for the university, within a few years the SUST will be turned into one of the finest institutions in the region. The university students invented and introduced the paperless 24/7 SMS Based Automated Registration of Admission Test procedure. The campus of SUST is located in Kumargaon, approximately five kilometers away from the heart of Sylhet City.
Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) ranked second among universities of Bangladesh in the www.webometrics.info ranking. The world rank of BUET is 2709. Seventeen Bangladeshi universities found their place on the list of the top 10 thousand universities of the world. Positions of other universities of the country in the world rankings are BRAC University ranked 2712, Dhaka University ranked 3222
