Clash over jackfruit auction in Sunamganj: Death toll rises to 4

The death toll from Monday’s clash between two groups over an auction of a jackfruit in Shantiganj upazila of Sunamganj district rose to four with the death of another victim on Monday night.

The deceased was identified as Mukhlechur Rahman, 60, son of Azir Mohammad, a resident of the village.
He absconded from the village after being injured in the clash to avoid arrest and recieving treatment in a relative’s house, said the deceased family members.

Earlier on Monday morning, a massive clash broke out between two groups of Saraimorol and Maldar families over an auction of a jackfruit in Hasnabad village under Joykalash union of the upazila, leaving three dead and 30 others injured.

Locals claimed that there was a previous enmity between the groups over a disputed land. Later the auction triggered them to lock into the fight.

Among the deceased Nurul Haque, 45, son of Abdul Latif, Babul Miah, 50, son of Abdus Sufi, died on the spot while Shahjahan Miah, 55, son of Abdul Basir, died in a hospital.

Superintendent of Sunamganj District Police Ehsan Shah confirmed the death matter.
