Jamaat’s registration: Scrapped appeal restored

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has accepted a petition to restore an appeal filed challenging the High Court order that declared Jamaat-e-Islami’s registration’s illegal as a political party.

A four-member Appellate Division bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed passed this order on Tuesday after holding hearing on the petition.

Now, the door for Jamaat-e-Islami to legally pursue reclaiming its registration has opened, said lawyers.

Barrister Ehsan Abdullah Siddiq and Adv Mohammad Shishir Manir were present in the court on behalf of Jamaat.

On September 1, Jamaat-e-Islami filed the petition to get back its registration as a political party.

Earlier, in response to a writ petition, the High Court had cancelled and declared Jamaat’s registration illegal on August 1, 2013.

On December 7, 2018, the Election Commission issued a notice cancelling Jamaat’s registration.

On November 19, 2023, the Appellate Division, led by the then Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan dismissed Jamaat’s appeal for default as its counsels did not appear before the court on that day.
