Ex-CJ ABM Khairul sent to jail

A magistrate court in Dhaka on Thursday sent former Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque to jail in a case filed over forgery of verdicts.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Saifuzzaman issued this order following completion of his remand.

Earlier this morning, ABM Khairul was produced before the court as his seven-day remand in the case ended today.

The remand report stated that Khairul Haque was interrogated intensively in police custody and that information related to the alleged forgery is still under verification. As he refused to give a confessional statement, the police requested that he remain in custody for the sake of further investigation. The court granted the request.

On August 27, last year, Supreme Court lawyer Mujahidul Islam Shaheen filed the case against former chief justice and former Law Commission chairman Khairul with Shahbagh Police Station over allegations of corruption and forgery of verdicts.

Khairul Haque was detained by detectives on July 24 from a residence in Dhanmondi. Initially, he was shown arrested in a separate juvenile murder case before being placed on remand in the forgery case.
