Bangladesh fell short by 14 runs in a thrilling chase against West Indies in the second T20 at the Bir Sreshtho Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman Stadium on Wednesday.
The home side managed 135/8 in 20 overs while chasing a target of 150.
Bangladesh needed 21 runs in the final over. Tanzim Sakib began with a 2-run shot, followed by a wide from Akil. Rishad Hossain, on strike for the second ball, could only score a single before attempting a big shot and getting caught on the third delivery, effectively ending Bangladesh’s hopes. Nasum Ahmed and Shakib tried to steer the chase in the final three balls but could not bridge the gap.
Earlier, West Indies batted first after winning the toss and posted 149-9 in their 20 overs. Despite an early wicket of Brandon King, Bangladesh struck early when Taskin Ahmed dismissed him for just 1 run.
The second-wicket partnership between Alick Athanaze and Shai Hope added 105 runs, putting Bangladesh under pressure. Athanaze scored 52 off 33 balls before being dismissed by Nasum Ahmed, while Hope contributed 55. Other West Indies batters failed to capitalise on this platform.
Bangladesh’s chase began cautiously with openers Tanzid Tamim and Saif Hassan. Saif fell early for 5, caught by Jason Holder off Kings’ bowling, leaving the score at 13-1. Liton Das provided a brisk 23 off 17 balls but could not build a big innings.
Tamim, after steady partnerships, scored 61 off 48 balls but Bangladesh lost momentum once he was dismissed. Jaker Ali managed 17 runs off 18 balls but the lower order could not finish the job.
Bangladesh’s bowlers had some bright moments, especially Taskin Ahmed, Nasum Ahmed, and Mustafizur Rahman, who shared wickets and kept the visitors in check at crucial stages.
Mustafizur claimed 3 wickets for 21 runs in a stellar spell. However, the side could not take enough wickets early to ease the chase.
Despite spirited efforts, Bangladesh fell short of the target, highlighting the need for better finishing in tight T20 encounters.
