Planning Minister Zonayed Saki resigned on Saturday as chief coordinator of the Ganosamhati Andolon, a party he has long represented. Dewan Abdur Rashid Nilu was appointed acting chief coordinator.
Saki announced his resignation at a press conference at the party’s central office in Hatirpool, Dhaka. “I have stepped down to separate party responsibilities from government duties,” he said.
Saki was re-elected as chief coordinator at the party’s fifth national conference on 3 November last year in Savar, Dhaka, where a new 55-member executive committee was also formed.
In the 13th national parliamentary elections held on 12 February this year, Saki, representing the BNP-led alliance, won the Brahmanbaria-6 (Banchharampur) seat under the party’s “Mathal” symbol.
He was subsequently appointed state minister for finance and planning in the new government led by BNP chairman Tarique Rahman. Later, he continued solely as state minister for planning after being removed from the finance ministry.
