India reviewing Bangladesh’s request to extradite Hasina: MEA

India on Friday said it is currently examining a request from the Bangladesh government seeking the extradition of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina as part of its ongoing judicial and legal procedures.

At a weekly media briefing, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA)spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “We are examining the request as part of our judicial and legal processes.”

He added that India will continue to engage constructively with all relevant stakeholders on the matter.

The extradition request was raised during a meeting in New Delhi on April 8, when Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman held talks with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.

According to reports, the request relates to the legal proceedings involving Sheikh Hasina, who has been sentenced to death by Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal.

Responding to questions about parliamentary moves in Bangladesh to ratify a ban on Awami League under the interim government, the MEA spokesperson said India is closely following developments in the country.

Jaiswal also noted that during his recent meeting with Khalilur Rahman, Jaishankar emphasized India’s interest in maintaining constructive engagement with Bangladesh’s new government and strengthening bilateral relations.

Both sides reportedly agreed to explore ways to deepen cooperation through existing bilateral mechanisms, with follow-up meetings expected in the near future.
