
The government on Monday deployed Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel to five districts in the country to counter a potential security threat ahead of the founding anniversary of the banned Awami League.
BGB personnel will remain active till 30 June in Cox’s Bazar, Madaripur, Sherpur, Gazipur and Moulvibazar, said the force’s Public Relations Officer Md Shariful Islam.
Additional BGB force will stay ready to swiftly deploy to other districts in case of emergencies, he added.
Earlier in the day, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed claimed, citing intelligence reports, that the banned Awami League was preparing to destabilize the country ahead of its founding anniversary on 23 June.
To ward off threats, Salahuddin announced the deployment of Army with magistracy powers at five key areas in the country: Dhaka city, Chattogram city, Gazipur city, Narayanganj district, Gopalganj district and Faridpur district.
