Activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League Sylhet city unit have vandalised PWD and Sylhet Registrary offices, torchard 8 vehicles and five shop afire during a factional clash of the ruling party’s student wing.
On information, two units of Kotwali fire service and Kotwali police rushed to the spot and took the situation under control.
Police sources said a chase and counter chase took place between the followers of BCL Sylhet unit President Shahriar Alam Samad and ex-joint convener of Sylhet city unit Pijush Kanti Dey on Wednesday night.
Following the incident, the two groups again locked into clash around 10pm on Thursday night.
Local sources said the followers of ex-joint convener were gossiping in the area when the president’s followers attacked them and vandalised several vehicles parked in front of the public works office.
Pijush said he was in Companyganj while the clash took place.
He alleged that Samad along with Chhatra Dal attacked on his supporters and also set fire on a bike belonged to one of his followers.
Samad said his followers brought a procession protesting abduction threat to Sajeeb Wazed Joy, ICT affairs adviser to the prime minister, on that night.
He alleged that PijushÕs followers first attacked them when they reached the area. He also claimed that the followers of his counterpart set the vehicles on fire and put the blame on them.
Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali police station Asaduzzaman said the BCL activists vandalised housing and public works office and sub-registrar’s office when they locked in a clash on Thursday night.
“The Chhatra League men also torched four motorbikes, two rickshaws, two bicycles, a three wheeler and two makeshift shops adjacent to sub-registrar office,” said the OC.
