Commenting on the student protests in Bangladesh, Apsana Begum, MP for Poplar and Limehouse, said:
“I am shocked and appalled that students have been killed or brutally injured in Bangladesh, whilst protesting against the Government quota system.
“I remain concerned for the safety of students and civilians in Bangladesh anticipating in these protests. The violence towards them, unlawful killings, the shutting down of the internet and mobile services, and other forms of repression are unacceptable and are in conflict with Bangladesh’s human rights obligations.
“The right to protest, peaceful assembly and freedom of expression are fundamental to having a functioning and flourishing democracy, and must be upheld.“
